Creating payment modules

I'm evaluating several membership plugins for WordPress and S2Member is one of the toppers in my list, however, I'm curious about one thing: the possibility of only paying by paypal or creditcard will scare lots of dutch customers, the 'general accepted' online payment interface in the Netherlands is iDEAL. Is it possible (I am a pro PHP programmer) to create a custom payment gateway and if it is, where can I find info to get started with it ?
