QC does not appear to be working

hi all

just installed QC 2.3.5 on WP 3.1 and it's inserting the comments in the html that says it's working, but there is no difference in page load times (server still churning away). in contrast, WP Super Cache worked like a champ, but i'm looking for something with more flexibility for working with Cart66.

another thing i'm noticing is that gzip compression does not seem to work. i can enable/disable this in cPanal, htaccess, or in my theme and it doesn't seem to be working (it was at one point though). i mention this in the event it might be related.

the /cache directory was created and contains cache files
wp-config contains "define('WP_CACHE', true);"
